Zelenskyy signs medical cannabis legalization into law
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed a bill regulating medical cannabis use, which was adopted by the Ukrainian parliament on Dec. 21, 2023, a message on the parliament’s website said on Feb. 15.
The document was signed by the president on Feb. 13 and will come into effect on Feb. 16.
The law, developed by the Healthcare Ministry, legalizes the use of cannabis plants for medical, industrial, scientific, and technical research purposes.
The bill’s parliamentary sponsors assert that cannabis can treat neurological disorders, including multiple sclerosis and epilepsy, digestive tract diseases, post-traumatic stress disorder, sleep disorders, chronic neuropathic pain, and is used in palliative care, among other applications.
On July 12, 2023, the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine called for the adoption of a law legalizing medications based on medical cannabis, emphasizing that Ukraine should adopt the world’s best and most effective medical practices.
The Ukrainian parliament passed the bill in its second reading on Dec. 21, 2023.
