Winter wheat acreage decreased in the U.S.

According to the latest data from the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture (USDA), the total winter wheat acreage in the country is 13.9 million acres. This number is down 6 percent from last year’s result.

Analyzing in more detail, Hard Red Winter (HRW) wheat acreage is down 5 percent year-over-year, bringing the acreage of this wheat variety down to 9.7 million acres. White Winter (WW) wheat acreage was also down 5 percent to 1.4 million hectares. However, Spring Wheat (SRW) acreage is expected to increase by 13 percent, leading to an expansion to 2.8 million hectares.

In addition, for major Durum wheat producing regions, such as Arizona and California, planted acreage is forecast to increase by 26.3 thousand acres, up 16 percent from last year’s level.
