June 18, Colombo: Wheat flour has been declared an essential commodity and included in the list of specified goods.

Minister of Trade, Commerce and Food Security Nalin Fernando has issued an extraordinary gazette notification listing wheat flour under the specified goods category which are deemed essential goods under Consumer Affairs Authority Act.

According to the Section 18 of the Consumer Affairs Authority Act No. 09 of 2003 (Amended), wheat flour has been gazetted as an essential commodity with effect from 16th June 2023.

The measure has been taken with the aim of controlling the rise in the price of wheat flour in the market.

Also, the government has taken steps to make it mandatory to obtain licenses for importing wheat flour.

Meanwhile, in the same gazette notification “Liquefied Petroleum Gas” prescribed by the Gaz. Ex. No. 2287/37 as an essential item on 08th July, 2022 has been removed from the List of Specified Goods.
