UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and handed over a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the extension of the grain deal.

During the discussion of the Black Sea Grain Initiative, Guterres expressed concern about the obstacles faced by the Joint Coordination Center in its daily activities.

The UN Secretary-General also handed Lavrov a letter to Putin, which outlines proposals for “improving, continuing and expanding” the grain initiative “taking into account the positions recently expressed by the parties, as well as the risks associated with global food security.”

“A similar letter was sent to the other two signatories to the agreement (Ukraine and Turkey – ed.),” the UN press service said.

It is noted that Guterres took into account the concerns expressed by Moscow regarding the implementation of the memorandum of understanding between the Russian Federation and the UN Secretariat “on the promotion of Russian food and fertilizers to world markets.” He spoke about the progress made in this regard and confirmed the UN’s readiness to continue working on this issue.
