Kakhovka HPP suffered extremely severe damage not only as a result of the direct explosion. Experts concluded that the plant cannot be repaired or restored after the explosion, so Ukrhydroenergo decided to build a new one in its place.

Ihor Syrota, CEO of Ukrhydroenergo, said this during the telethon.

“We understand that we will have to build a new power plant very quickly. We will build a more beautiful and powerful plant on the same site,” he said.

According to him, the dam’s structures were partially washed away by a strong water flow and further erosion of the hydraulic structures is taking place. A new dam will need to be built to restore normal water supply to the population.

According to Syrota, today Ukrhydroenergo, together with the design institute and builders, has started discussing how to quickly rebuild the dam after de-occupation.

Experts are already developing plans on how to quickly fence off the dam in order to supply water to the affected regions from upstream reservoirs and later fill the Kakhovka reservoir again.

In addition, he said that blowing up the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant would have huge consequences for Crimea, as the peninsula would be left without water for years. Ukraine will need to quickly solve the problem of water supply to the Crimean peninsula after de-occupation.

As a reminder, 16 gates and the building of the Kakhovka HPP have been destroyed as a result of the Russian occupiers’ explosion, and there is a threat of flooding of power facilities.
