Ukraine’s share in world grain trade is 5% – FAO
Ukraine’s share in the global grain trade is 5% in times of war. This was stated by Dmytro Khokhodko, Chief Economist of the FAO UN Investment Center, at the all-Ukrainian professional conference GRAIN AND PROCESSING: DEVELOPMENT DESPITE THE WAR was told by Dmytro Prykhodko, Chief Economist at the UN FAO Investment Center.
According to him, Ukraine also currently has a 0.3% share of the global flour market and 1.2% share of other products.
The FAO predicts that global corn production will continue to grow, reaching approximately 1.2 billion tons per year.
Wheat will be the next driver crop. The forecast for global harvest growth is up to 772 million tons per year.
Over the next 10 years, consumption will grow annually:
- corn by 148 million tons, or 12%,
- wheat by 29 million tons, or about 10%,
- other grains – by about 10%.
The US will increase corn consumption by 37 million tons per year. This will be due to the growth of biofuel consumption, which accounts for 40% of corn processing in the US.
China, Vietnam, Brazil, Argentina and India are expected to increase their corn consumption.
Pakistan will increase its wheat consumption by 5.3 million tons, while in the EU it will decrease.
As a reminder, in 2022/23 MY Ukrainian flour producers increased the exports to 149.7 thsd tonnes, up 20.1% compared to the pre-war 2020/2021 MY, when the volume reached 124.6 thsd tonnes.
