Ukraine. The percentage of soil moisture is at most 30% almost across the country

Weather conditions. Air temperatures plummeted within a day on November 21-22. The average daily air temperature ranged from -6°С to +5°С, being 0.7-5.0°С below normal. Because of a temporary sharp cold spell, the soil froze to a depth of 6 to 20 cm in snow-free fields on November 23 to 25, and the soil temperature at the tillering node depth of winter grains dropped to 3.7-6.0°С below zero – this is far above the killing temperature level.

Moisture supply. The northern, western and central regions of the country saw insignificant precipitation, but its amount was within 3.4 mm to 11 mm, while the southern and eastern regions received no precipitation. Precipitation occurred not all over the country. The percentage of accessible soil moisture is at most 30% almost all across the country, equaling 20% in the central regions. Poor moisture condition (below 10%) is observed in Cherkasy, Kirovohrad and Odesa regions. In the rest of the country, moisture content in the plow soil layer under winter crops is optimal at 21-28 mm.

Crop condition. In most regions in the Steppe zone and partially in the Forest-Steppe zone (Cherkasy, Kyiv, Sumy, Vinnytsia), plant growing conditions deviated for the worse from both the long-term average and 2018. The reason is critical moisture content in the seed soil layer, reports UkrAgroConsult.
