Ukraine: Sunflower and soybean acreage will increase by 10-15%
This year, the area under oilseeds is expected to increase and the area under grains and corn to decrease. In general, in terms of gross production and the potential value of the future harvest, Ukraine will reach similar indicators compared to 2022.
This was stated by Taras Vysotsky, First Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, on the air of the “Yedyni Novyny (United News) marathon”.
“The area under sunflower, soybean and rapeseed will be increased by 10-15%. The good news is that we plan to increase sugar beet plantings. Grain production will decline as less winter wheat was sown in the fall due to unfavorable weather conditions. Corn acreage has been reduced by 10-12% due to expensive logistics,” said Taras Vysotskyi.
The First Deputy Minister noted that this year farmers faced a number of challenges, especially in the de-occupied territories. In particular, the reduction of sown areas, mined fields, financial problems, limited markets and expensive logistics, as the aggressor country continues to block the full operation of the Black Sea ports.
At the same time, he said, the government is doing everything possible to solve these problems. A program to extend preferential lending for the agricultural sector has been approved, a humanitarian demining headquarters is operating, and the grain initiative has been extended. Alternative logistics has also developed significantly, with additional road and rail checkpoints being built.
