Ukraine. Soil drought in the southern, eastern, and central regions may delay planting of winter crops

Crop condition:

– Night air temperatures on August 1-10 dropped to 7-9°C; daytime temperature growth to 35°C; the development of late-sown crops was hindered by high soil temperatures at a 10-cm depth along with a lack of rainfall.

Moisture supply:

– In corn fields, the amount of moisture in the 0-100 cm soil layer across the western and northern regions was fair (81-120 mm) and sufficient (137-160 mm). It was poor (51-77 mm) in the rest of the country.
– In most sunflower fields, the top soil layer was dry at all or contained less than 10 mm of effective moisture.

Weather forecast for August 17-23:

– The highest precipitation rates are in the western and northern regions (25-35 mm and 5-10 mm, respectively);
– Air temperatures at 25 … 27°C. Soil moisture will be sufficient for tillage before planting winter crops;
– No precipitation is forecast in the southern, eastern, and central regions, with air temperatures at 26 … 30°C. This may aggravate soil drought and delay planting of winter crops. Weather may have an adverse effect on development of corn and sunflower crops.

The lack of effective precipitation in many regions may adversely affect corn yield. UkrAgroConsult will revise its crop estimate next week.

With regard to sunflower seed and soybeans, UkrAgroConsult was forced to reduce its estimates – they are available in our publications and analytical platform AgriSupp.
