Crop condition:

  • Dry weather with average air temperatures 2-4ºC above normal on September 11-20;
  • Farmers continue planting of winter wheat. Due to moisture shortages, they are forced to sow into dry soil or postpone planting;
  • This year’s weather conditions accelerate ripening of late crops;
  • The optimum and even allowable period for rape planting has expired.

Moisture supply:

  • No precipitation occurred this past week;
  • Long dryness leads to further soil drought and worse conditions for tillage, fall planting and emergence;
  • 70% of areas intended for fall planting contain no moisture in the topsoil (0-10 cm and 0-20 cm layers);
  • 20% have insignificant moisture (less than 10 mm in the plow layer);
  • In some areas, moisture content nears critical values;
  • 10% enjoy optimum soil moisture for planting, germination and emergence of grain crops.

Weather forecast for October 1-4:

  • Precipitation (15-25 mm) in the northern, central and southern regions, up to 70 mm in the western ones, 5-10 mm in the east;
  • Air temperature was +13 … 15°C in the West, +16 … 18°C in the North, +18 … 20°C in the East, +20 … 22°C in the South;
  • Precipitation will favor tillage before planting winter crops, as well as emergence;
  • The soil in the west may become too wet because of heavy rains, UkrAgroConsult reports.
