Ukraine. Farmers may delay the start of fall planting till late September – early October

On September 1-10, the average air temperature in the East was one of the highest in 30 years (4-6ºC above normal). It was dry and hot after September 10. Soil drought has become severer and more widespread due to high daytime air and soil temperatures.

Farmers may delay the start of fall planting till late September – early October. Harvest of buckwheat, millet and sunflower continues. Farmers have begun harvesting soybeans and corn, UkrAgroConsult reports.

Rains of various intensities fell in the west and north on September 17. However, they were not effective and just moistened the top layer without replenishing soil moisture content. Moisture content as of September 17 amounted to 1mm in the 0-10 cm layer and 2-5 mm in the 0-20 cm layer. The 0-10 cm soil layer contains almost no moisture in fields that were not fallow before planting.

Weather forecast for September 22-27:

  • Dry, rain-free weather all over the country;
  • Air temperature at +24 … 26°C in the West, +22 … 24°C in the North, +23 … 25°C in the East, and +24 … 26°C in the South;
  • The lack of precipitation in the southern and eastern regions may aggravate soil drought that that is unfavorable for planting winter crops;
  • in the rest of Ukraine, rain-free weather may lead to a soil moisture decrease. In turn, the latter may adversely affect emergence of winter crops.
