The most topical subject in Ukraine’s pulse market now is peas – their current crop condition, quality, yield and harvesting progress.
The harvest started with a two-week delay due to late planting because of a prolonged winter. While large-scale harvesting operations in previous seasons began as early as July 1, this season they kicked off as late as July 15.
405 KMT had been harvested from an area of 180 Th ha by July 29 (77% of the Ag Ministry’s target of 235.4 Th ha). For now, the average yield in Ukraine is below expectations.
At the same time, there is a chance for higher yield because of the harvest has not yet moved northward far enough. Historically, it is the third week when the five-year average pea yield showed growth.
Moreover, there are some concerns about the new crop quality. Pea quality deterioration in Ukraine could negatively affect its export prospects in MY 2020/21. Peas of too poor quality for export will most likely be used for feeding animals.
