Ukraine and Russia still the key suppliers of raw material for Turkey’s flour milling industry

Over quite a short period of time, Turkey has gained the lead in the world wheat flour market. According to the IGC, Turkish flour exports in MY 2020/21 will reach 4.9 MMT (in grain equivalent). This would be up 6% from MY 2019/20, but not record high – Turkey already shipped abroad that much in previous seasons.

Such significant shipments are made possible thanks to strong global demand – the importers of Turkish flour include countries of the Near East (Iraq, Yemen), South America, and Africa.

As before, the biggest raw material suppliers of Turkish flour millers are Russia with a 77% share, Ukraine (11%), and EU countries (roughly 10%).

Unfortunately, neither Ukraine nor Russia or Kazakhstan develop their flour-milling industries. The grain processing sectors in Ukraine and Russia suffer from low margins, the lack of both strategic planning and adequate control (the latter concerns primarily the quality of produced products), UkrAgroConsult reports.

The top flour producer in the Black Sea region is Kazakhstan, but Kazakh flour production decreased this season as well. The main reason is a decline in demand from the key consumer, Uzbekistan, which has taken up production of own flour.
