Ukraine. A third UN-chartered vessel arrived loaded with grain for Africa
The bulk carrier Ikaria Angel, chartered by the World Food Program (WFP) of the United Nations, arrived at the port of Chornomorsk on September 12 to load 30,000 tons of wheat. This is reported by the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine.
After loading, the food will go to Ethiopia, part of whose population, according to the conclusions of the UN, is on the verge of a food disaster.
“We understand the global food responsibility of Ukraine to the world, especially to those countries in Africa and Asia that are in a state of humanitarian disaster. Since the start of the Initiative, two vessels chartered by the World Food Program have already been dispatched. On board they are more than 60,000 tons of Ukrainian wheat for the residents of Yemen and Ethiopia. Our WFP partners will additionally purchase another 190,000 tons of grain for further export to countries suffering from food shortages,” explained Minister of Infrastructure Oleksandr Kubrakov.
He added that these vessels receive, load and ship as quickly and efficiently as possible.
“During the implementation of the Initiative on safe transportation of agricultural products, 122 vessels have already departed from Ukrainian ports. About 2.78 million tons of food are on board,” the ministry concluded.
We will remind that on July 22 in Istanbul, at the suggestion of the United Nations, Ukraine, Turkey and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres signed the Initiative on the safe transportation of grain and food products from the Ukrainian ports of Odesa, Chornomorsk and Pivdenny. Within its borders, almost 0.5 million tons of Ukrainian agricultural products went to Africa through the “grain corridor”.
