U.S. Corn Condition 50% GD/EX down 5, Soybeans 51% Down 3

The 2023 U.S. corn condition declined 5% last week to 50% rated good/excellent. Seven states indicated that the corn condition improved last week while 10 states indicated that the corn condition declined and 1 was unchanged Most of the improvements were found in the western and southern areas while most of the declines were found in the -central and northern areas. The top five rated corn states are: Colorado, Tennessee, North Carolina, Texas, and Ohio. The five lowest rated corn states are: Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, and a tie between Wisconsin, South Dakota, and Indiana.

Rainfall over the weekend favored the northern Plains and the northern and eastern Midwest. The heaviest rainfall occurred in South Dakota and southern and eastern North Dakota. Rainfall in the Midwest overperformed somewhat in northern Iowa and norther Illinois but underperformed in southern Illinois and Missouri.

Five states indicated that the soybean condition improved last week while 13 states indicated that the soybean condition declined. Most of the improvements were found in the southern areas while most of the declines were found in the central areas. The top five rated soybean states are: Tennessee, Mississippi, North Carolina, Arkansas, and Louisiana. The five lowest rated soybean states are: Michigan, Missouri, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana.

Soybean growth had stalled in the dryer areas, so weekend rains were well received and they will help the crop to start regrowing. Even with these rains, more will be needed on a regular basis for the crop to approach a normal height.

The nation’s topsoil moisture was essentially unchanged last week with 10 states indicating improved topsoil moisture and 8 states indicating lower topsoil moisture. Most of the improvements were found in the central and northern areas while most of the declines were found in the southern areas. The five states with the best topsoil moisture are: North Carolina, Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Dakota. The five states with the lowest topsoil moisture are: Missouri, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana.

The rains over the weekend were welcomed where they occurred, but much more is needed on a regular basis to end dryness concerns.
