The National Grain Council (UHT) raised its wheat harvest forecast for Turkey from 20.75 million tons to 21.5 million tons amid heavier-than-expected rainfall. This is reported by Hürriyet Daily News.

After a dry winter, many regions received heavy rainfall in March, April and May, the UHT report said. The average rainfall during the spring months, which is a crucial period for the future wheat harvest, exceeded the levels recorded in previous years.

The area planted to wheat is estimated at 7.3 million hectares.

UHT forecasts that wheat production in the Marmara Sea region will remain at the average annual level, while it will be higher in the Aegean and Mediterranean regions by 3%, and 20 and 12% higher in the Black Sea and East Anatolian regions.

Wheat production has averaged 20 million tons in recent years, the UHT said.

In May, the Turkish Institute of Statistics (TUIK) said the wheat harvest would increase to 20.5 million tons, up 3.8% from 2022, and the gross grain harvest to 39.5 million tons, up 2.1%.
