This year, Ukrainian Danube ports can handle 20 million tons of cargo

Ukrainian ports on the Danube can handle 20 million tons of cargo this year. Minister of Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development of Ukraine Oleksandr Kubrakov wrote about this on Facebook.

Last year, Danube ports handled more than 16 million tons of cargo. This is three times more than the pre-war maximum.

“This year, we plan to handle at least 20 million tons through the Danube River,” said the head of the agency. “Despite the fact that today the ports of Izmail, Reni, and Ust-Dunaisk have used almost all available cargo handling capacities, there is potential for further development. Namely, modernization and renewal of port infrastructure, attraction of investments for the construction of new terminals and dredging. The investment requirement is at least USD 120 million.”

Mr. Kubrakov also said that international partners are ready to invest in the ports of the Danube Region. “This is an absolutely clear signal voiced today (April 26 – ed.) during a visit to Odesa region together with the United States Ambassador Bridget Brink, USAID Director of Mission to Ukraine James Hope, Director General of the Danube Commission Secretariat Manfred Seitz and representative of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport Alan Baron,” the Minister wrote.

He noted that the seaports of Izmail and Reni have prepared the necessary infrastructure and organized the transshipment of new cargo flows – containers, liquid bulk, grain and other cargo.

The head of the department, together with American and European partners, also discussed the first results of launching additional port capacities:

• more than 20 new marine terminals have been put into operation;
• new transshipment technologies have been developed using floating cranes, mobile reloaders, lighters, storage vessels as floating warehouses, and other means;
• new temporary warehouses were built, scales, laboratories, etc. were equipped, and new temporary warehouses were built.

Mr. Kubrakov reminded that the railroad connection between Basarabianska and Berezino has been restored, allowing cargo to reach ports relatively quickly. Work is also underway to connect the Giurgiulesti point on the Ukrainian-Moldovan border with the Romanian port of Galati.
