The wheat harvest in Ukraine in 2022 is expected to be 16.5 million tons, which is half of what was predicted before the war. The decrease is primarily related to the partial occupation of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions, where wheat, barley and sunflower are grown the most.

This is reported by Agroportal. It is noted: another reason for this is “non-observance of agronomic measures by farmers”.

“However, many producers continue to keep grain, while harvesting a new crop. Therefore, the supply of wheat in Ukraine remains very high,” the report says.

At the same time, it is emphasized, according to Pavel Haustov, an analyst of the Barva Invest consulting and analytical company, that in 2021 Ukraine harvested a record wheat harvest – which required high export rates at the level of 23 million tons. It was possible to export only 18.5 million tons.

“For most months, exports were carried out at an adequate level, in February they shipped 1.5 million tons – and then the war began, the ports were blocked. Wheat practically never went abroad,” he said.

For his part, the Minister of Agrarian Policy, Mykola Solsky, previously reported that Ukraine consumes “3-4 times less wheat than it currently collects” per year. This, according to him, gives reason to say that the country will have more than enough for the 2022 harvest.

“We consume 3-4 times less per year than we collect now. We are collecting normally, with a slight delay, but this is due to the weather,” said the minister.
