The UN and other international organizations should actively engage in unblocking Ukrainian ports
According to UN Secretary of State Antonio Guterres, Russia’s war on Ukraine in the food, energy and financial sectors could lead to a crisis that will lead to poverty, hunger and impoverishment of 1.7 billion people – more than 1/5 of the world’s population.
According to a UN analytical report, the share of Ukraine and Russia in world production of wheat and barley is 30%, corn – 20%, sunflower oil – more than 50%.
The UN therefore calls on international financial institutions to provide funding for the most vulnerable countries, help developing country governments, invest in the poor and vulnerable by strengthening social protection, and reform the global financial system to reduce inequality.
However, in order to resolve the global food crisis, Russia’s piracy, which blocks international merchant ships in Ukraine’s Black Sea ports and bypasses waterways to Ukrainian ports, must first be stopped. After the destruction of the flagship of the Russian fleet of the cruiser “Moscow” by Ukrainian troops, a convenient situation arose for the formation of an international coalition to ensure safe navigation in the Black Sea and the release of 94 foreign ships stranded in Ukrainian ports.
Turkish Transport and Infrastructure Minister Adil Karaismailoglu said his country was in talks with Ukraine and Russia over its 22 ships loaded with steel and sunflower oil and stranded on Ukraine’s Black Sea coast. At the same time, the General Directorate of Maritime Affairs of Turkey said that the country’s vessels continue to transport cargo from Russian ports, except for Azov.
Turkey can become the leader of such a coalition and receive new political and economic dividends, as it continues to trade actively with Russia and is interested in lowering food prices after the unblocking of Ukraine’s ports.
