The lag in winter wheat harvesting in the US is growing
By July 9, the winter wheat harvest was only harvested from 46% of the area. This is stated in the report of the National Agricultural Statistics Service under the US Department of Agriculture (NASS USDA).
The pace of harvesting is lower than market participants expected and lags behind the five-year average by 13%. As of the same date, on average over the last five years, 59% of the winter wheat area was threshed, compared to 62% last year. A week earlier, the lag from the five-year average was 9%.
The condition of spring wheat crops continues to deteriorate. As of July 9, the share of crops in excellent and good condition decreased to 47%, down 1% from a week earlier and 23% from a year ago.
On the contrary, the condition of corn and soybeans improved. The share of corn crops in excellent and good condition increased by 4% to 55% over the week, and soybean crops – by 1% to 51%.
