The European Parliament supported the abolition of duties on goods from Ukraine for another year

On May 9, the European Parliament voted to extend duty-free trade with Ukraine for another year. This was reported by “Radio Svobody (Radio Liberty) journalist Rikard Jozwiak on Twitter.

According to him, during the plenary session, the decision was supported by 537 deputies, while 42 parliamentarians voted against and 38 abstained.

According to the European Parliament’s website, the decision gives the green light to suspend EU import duties on exports of Ukrainian agricultural products for another year, which should support the country’s economy.

This is a unilateral suspension of both import duties and anti-dumping duties imposed by the EU on Ukrainian products.

“The suspension of tariffs applies to fruits and vegetables, which are subject to the system of input prices, as well as agricultural products and processed products, which are subject to tariff quotas. In accordance with the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement, starting from January 1, 2023, industrial products are subject to zero duty, so they are not included in the new proposal,” the statement said.

As reported, at the end of April, the European Union’s permanent representatives agreed to extend the abolition of import duties on Ukrainian exports to the EU for another year. The decision will come into force the day after its publication in the EU’s Official Journal.

Following discussions among EU countries, the European Commission imposed a temporary ban on exports of four agricultural products from Ukraine – wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunflower – to five EU countries starting May 2. This restriction is set as an exception and will remain in effect until June 5, 2023, but may be extended.

At the same time, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia pledged to cancel their unilateral measures to ban imports of agricultural products from Ukraine.
