The European Commission asks not to speculate on the extension of the ban on grain from Ukraine
The European Commission intends to intensify the work of the joint Coordination Group established to address issues related to the export of Ukrainian food by September 15, when EU restrictions on the export of Ukrainian grain to five countries are to be lifted, said Miriam Garcia Ferrer, European Commission spokesperson for Agriculture and Trade.
“The meeting of the Platform took place yesterday to discuss again what are the opportunities to increase the capacity of the “solidarity corridors”, what are the alternative ways and financial opportunities to improve transport links. We will hold (such meetings – ed.) more often until September 15 to have good results that will ensure the proper functioning of this system,” the spokeswoman said.
Ferrer noted that it is very important for the EC to continue to demonstrate full support and solidarity with Ukraine so that it can continue to trade with the world and maintain global food security.
She reminded that the mentioned safeguard measures against Ukrainian food exports are temporary and limited, they are to be terminated by September 15 and cover four types of products, including wheat, corn, sunflower seeds and rapeseed. Trade in these products in the five EU countries neighboring Ukraine is indeed banned, but the transit of these products to other European and global markets continues.
The spokesperson emphasized the need to find constructive solutions to these problems and refrained from speculating on possible EU actions after September 15, particularly in the context of Poland and Hungary’s intention to impose unilateral restrictions on Ukrainian agricultural exports if such restrictions are not agreed upon at the EU level.
