The EU may impose sanctions on Poland if it extends the embargo on grain from Ukraine

The overwhelming majority of EU member states do not support the extension of the embargo on grain imports from Ukraine after September 15, and in case of unilateral steps by Poland, some countries may take countermeasures. This was reported by the Polish radio station RMF FM.

The European Commission believes that Poland’s unilateral extension of the embargo on Ukrainian grain is a violation of European law. Poland may face penalties for this, but their application involves a lengthy procedure.

According to RMF FM’s sources, Warsaw has concerns about trade countermeasures that may be introduced by some EU countries. This includes Germany, but in general, up to 20 countries are against the extension.

Poland also admits that other Eastern European countries may refuse to support the embargo after September 15.

Unofficially, RMF FM has learned that Romania is not likely to oppose the European Commission’s decision, but others, such as Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary, may make the same decision.

As you know, Warsaw has stated that if the restrictions are not extended at the EU level, it will impose a unilateral ban and hopes to find allies in this matter.

In turn, Ukraine is firm in its demands that the EU should lift unilateral restrictions on Ukrainian exports and believes that Brussels should reach an agreement with Poland.
