Sunflower in Ukraine has surpassed corn by more than 1 million hectares by acreage in 2024
As of May 30, according to the interactive map Sowing Online, Ukrainian farmers have planted 96.9% of the planned area with sunflower.
13 regions have completed sowing the crop.
Currently, the following regions are leading in terms of the area under the oilseed:
- Dnipropetrovska – 740.1 thou hectares (96.2% of the planned area);
- Kirovohrad – 661.0 thou hectares (100%);
- Mykolaiv – 476.0 (99.2%).
Traditionally, the western regions planted the least amount of sunflower. In particular, only 3.2 thou hectares have been allocated for the crop in Zakarpattia region (sowing is completed); 18.3 thou hectares have been sown in Ivano-Frankivsk region, while the planned area is 19.0 thou hectares; in Chernivtsi region, although the area sown is 1.8% more than planned, the total area is only 22.5 thou hectares. In the Lviv region, sunflower is still being sown, as of this date, 14.1 thousand hectares have been sown, which is only 54.7% of the planned area (25.8 thousand hectares).
In general, 5 mln 123.9 thou hectares (96.9%) of sunflower has already been sown for the 2024 harvest in Ukraine and it is the leader among spring crops this year (for comparison, corn is in second place among spring crops, which has already been sown and 3 mln 895.2 thou hectares have been allocated for it).
