Soybean planting pace remains strong in Brazil despite some regional delays

The planting of the new Brazilian soybean crop again had a good week in most producing states. Despite this, some states that received heavier rainfall in recent days had a slower pace, such as the states of Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul.

According to a survey carried out by SAFRAS & Mercado, until October 14, Brazilian producers sowed 19.1% of the total area expected for the country in the 2022/23 crop. The percentage is equivalent to approximately 8.213 mln hectares sown, out of a total of 42.887 mln hectares estimated for planting. In the previous week, the percentage was 9.7%. In the same period of the previous year, the index reached 21.1%, while the five-year average for the period is 15%.

In Rio Grande do Sul, of a total area estimated at 6.4 mln hectares, 0.2% were sown, or approximately 13 thousand hectares. The week before, there was no data. In the same period of the previous year, the percentage was 0%, as well as the five-year average for the period.

In Paraná, 29% of the area destined for soybeans were sown. The index is equivalent to approximately 1.668 mln hectares planted, out of a total of 5.750 mln hectares estimated for the state. In the previous week, the percentage was 18%. In the same period last year, the percentage reached 35%, while the five-year average is 34.2% for the period.

In Mato Grosso, out of an expected total area of 11.85 mln hectares, 41% have already been sown, equivalent to approximately 4.859 mln hectares. In the previous week, the index was 19%. In the same period of the previous year, the percentage was 45%. The five-year average for the period is 26.6%.

In Mato Grosso do Sul, planting reaches 15% of an estimated total area of 3.85 mln hectares, equivalent to roughly 578 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 7%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 14%. The five-year average for the period is 17.3%.

In Goiás, out of an expected total area of 4.2 mln hectares, 17% were sown, equivalent to 722 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 9%. In the same period last year, the index was also 14%, while the five-year average for the period is 8.8%.

In São Paulo, out of a total area estimated at 1.25 mln hectares, 15% were sown, or nearly 188 thousand hectares. Last week, the percentage was 11%. In the same period of the previous year, the index was 18%, while the five-year average for the period is 7.6%.

In Minas Gerais, out of an expected total area of 2.05 mln hectares, 8% were sown, or approximately 164 thousand hectares. The previous week, the percentage was 4%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 13%, while the five-year average for the period is 5.4%.

Weather forecasts now point to the maintenance of slightly higher moisture in the South Region and part of Mato Grosso do Sul between October 14 and 20, which may again prevent a better work advance. The Midwest and Southeast regions must receive less rainfall, while in the Northeast the moisture must be very low.

Between October 21 and 27, relevant moisture must spread throughout the country, with a smaller accumulated volume expected only for Rio Grande do Sul.
