Soybean harvest pace improves but remains delayed in Brazil

Porto Alegre, March 24 2021 – The harvest of the new Brazilian soybean season had better progress last week in most of the main growing states. With less rainy weather in some states in the South, Southeast, Midwest, and Northeast regions, the harvest advanced more rapidly, especially in Santa Catarina, Paraná, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Minas Gerais. In Mato Grosso, new rainfall was registered in some microregions, which prevented a better advance of agricultural machines. Despite this, the work is already moving towards the final stretch in the main growing state in the country.

According to a survey carried out by SAFRAS & Mercado, until March 19, 59.5% of a total sown area of 38.610 million tons were reaped, equivalent to approximately 22.96 million hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 45.7%. In the same period last year, 68.4% of the area had already been reaped, while the five-year average for the period is 62.9%.

In Rio Grande do Sul, out of a total sown area of 6.08 million hectares, 6% were reaped, or approximately 365 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the index was 1.5%. In the same period of the previous year, 19% had already been reaped, while the five-year average for the period is 11.8%.

In Paraná, out of a total area of 5.6 million hectares sown, 62% were reaped, or the equivalent to approximately 3.47 million hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 39%. In the same period last year, 80% were already reaped, while the five-year average for the period is 73.4%.

In Mato Grosso, out of a total sown area of 10.3 million hectares, 92% were reaped, or approximately 9.48 million hectares. In the previous week, the index was 80%. In the same period last year, 99% had already been reaped. The five-year average for the period is 93.9%.

In Mato Grosso do Sul, out of a total sown area of ​​3.25 million hectares, 82% were reaped, or nearly 2.67 million hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 66%. In the same period of the previous year, 95% had already been reaped, while the five-year average for the period is 91.8%.

In Goiás, out of a total sown area of 3.795 million hectares, 80% were reaped, or approximately 3.04 million hectares. In the previous week, the index was 62%. In the same period last year, 84% had already been reaped. The five-year average for the period is 79.4%.

In São Paulo, out of a total sown area of 1.16 million hectares, 77% were reaped, or nearly 893 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 65%. In the same period of the previous year, 75% had already been reaped, while the five-year average for the period is 74%.

In Minas Gerais, out of a total area estimated at 1.82 million hectares, 65% were reaped, or approximately 1.18 million hectares. In the previous week, the index was 47%. In the same period of the previous year, the percentage reaped reached 79%. The five-year average for the period is 64.6%.

In Bahia, from a total sown area of 1.7 million hectares, 18% were reaped, or nearly 306 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the index was 11%. In the same period last year, 21% had already been reaped. The five-year average for the period is 19%.

The weather forecasts point to low moisture in most of the states of the Midwest, Southeast, and Northeast in the period between March 19 and 25, which should favor the advance of machines. In Mato Grosso, the northern half of the state must keep receiving some rainfall, while the southern half must receive little or no moisture. In the South region, Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina must receive some rainfall, while Paraná must have little moisture.
In the period between March 26 and April 1, weather maps point to the maintenance of little or no moisture over most of the states of the Midwest, Southeast and Northeast, while the South region is expected to continue with some precipitation.
