Second vessel leaves Odesa after Russia’s participation in the grain deal is suspended
On the morning of August 26, the Liberian-flagged bulk carrier Primus left the port of Odesa. The ship sailed to the Bulgarian city of Varna. This was announced by Andriy Klymenko, project manager of the Institute for Black Sea Strategic Studies.
“The second one is gone. We are keeping our fingers crossed, we believe in the Armed Forces – the Navy,” he said.
Primus is due to arrive at its destination port around 13:00 on August 27. The ship arrived in Odesa on February 20, 2022, from the Greek port of Perama. Back then, the bulk carrier was called Polarstar. However, during its stay in Odesa, it changed ownership. Now, instead of the Greek Erma Marine SA, it is owned by Nova Polar from Singapore.
Primus was the second vessel to leave the port of Odesa after Russia withdrew from the grain deal. The first was the Hong Kong-flagged container ship Joseph Schulte.
After the suspension of the grain corridor, shipping and insurance companies expressed concerns about safety. Given that Russian troops have intensified shelling of grain infrastructure in Ukraine, especially in Odesa region.
In turn, Ukraine has created a new “humanitarian corridor,” noting that it will be used primarily to evacuate ships stuck in Ukrainian ports.
