Safrinha Corn in Brazil 87.3% Harvested

Farmers in Brazil had harvested 87.3% of Brazil’s 2023/24 safrinha corn crop as of late last week compared to 64.8% last year and 69.8% average according to Patria AgroNegocios. Hot and dry weather across central Brazil has allowed the safrinha harvest to progress at a record pace.

The largest safrinha corn producing state in Brazil is Mato Grosso and the Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Economics (Imea) reported on Friday that the safrinha corn was 99.9% harvested compared to 96% last year.

Parana is the second largest safrinha corn producing state in Brazil and farmers in the state had harvested 85% of the corn as of late last week according to the Department of Rural Economics (Deral). The corn harvest in the state is expected to be completed by mid-August.

If the weather cooperates, farmers in Parana and other regions of southern Brazil will start planting their 2024/25 first corn crop by the end of August. The first corn crop in Brazil usually represents approximately 22% to 24% of Brazil’s total corn production. The majority of Brazil’s corn is produced as the safrinha crop planted as a double crop after soybeans are harvested.
