Russia continues to use food as a weapon. After unilaterally refusing to participate in the Black Sea Grain Initiative, world food prices have risen, and Moscow itself continues to receive record profits from grain exports. This was stated by US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller.

“Russia has suspended its participation in the Black Sea Grain Initiative. This was the latest blow to global food supplies. A few hours later, the Kremlin launched missiles and attack drones at Ukraine’s grain hub, the port of Odesa,” he said. After that, Miller added, a spokesman for Russian dictator Vladimir Putin threatened the safety of Ukrainian ships that dare to transport food through international waters.

“It is obvious that Russia continues to use food as a weapon of war. This time it will affect not only the people of Ukraine, but also the global food supply and prices,” he said.

According to him, since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale aggression, food prices have risen by 22%, and over the past day they have jumped even more.

“Meanwhile, Russia continues to make record profits from grain exports,” the US State Department spokesman said.

Miller emphasized that the impact of Moscow’s malicious actions is already being felt, especially in the Horn of Africa, the Sahel region, Yemen and Afghanistan. He expressed hope that these countries realize that it is Russia that is responsible for blocking the access of food to the places where it is needed most.
