Russian pulse crop forecast raised

UkrAgroConsult

According to official data published by the Russian State Statistics Service, 1976.2 Th ha was planted to pulses in 2020 (-9% from MY 2019/20), including peas: 1324.5 Th ha (+6% from MY 2019/20).

Among all the pulses, pea acreage was expanded to the greatest degree. We believe the reason could have been unfavorable weather conditions in the period of preplant tillage and planting (moisture shortages, abnormal temperature swings).

In UkrAgroConsult’s opinion, the preliminary figures are understated and the final areas may turn out to be much larger.

The pulse crop forecast for Russia was lifted at the expense of a pea estimate increase. The latter resulted from a gain in the average yield in Russia owing to favorable weather while ripening in the Volga, Central, Ural districts, which host 46% of plantings in 2020.

Russian pea export potential is estimated considerably higher, but the start to 2020/21 exports was poorer than last year. We will continue keeping a close eye on real-time port reports.
