russia decides to create a grain hub in Egypt
Because of the war in Ukraine, Russia decided to create a grain hub. Egypt was well suited for this role. The agreement between the two countries will not only strengthen relations between Moscow and Cairo, but will also ensure food security for the latter, Russian media report.
One of the consequences of the war in Ukraine has been a decline in demand for Russian wheat due to Western sanctions. They impede grain exports and prevent this figure from remaining at the same level as before. At the same time, Egypt’s need for wheat imports is growing due to insufficient Ukrainian exports, which Cairo had counted on before the conflict.
“Egypt will become the center of supply of Russian grain to the Middle East and Africa,” said Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin, “Egypt has relied on Russian grain, especially wheat, in recent years because of its quality and price. And now all conditions have been created for Egypt to become a hub for Russian grain.”
