Romanian government announces first aid package for farmers and transporters who protested
The Romanian government has presented the first package of measures to help farmers and transporters, Biziday reports.
Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu presented some of the first measures, which include, in particular, financial assistance and some changes in legislation.
“We approve the first package of measures agreed with farmers and transporters. It is clear that the protests were justified. As for the farmers, we have several projects,” Ciolacu said.
According to the head of the Romanian government, farmers will receive financial assistance in the amount of 100 euros per hectare, which cannot exceed 280 thousand euros in total. It is estimated that more than 162 thousand farmers should receive payments totaling more than 250 million euros.
The government will also approve some changes demanded by the carriers. In particular, regarding the registration and periodic technical inspection of vehicles, as well as the equivalence of certain categories of driver’s licenses.
Recently, the Romanian Ministry of Agriculture and representatives of large agricultural organizations signed an agreement that satisfied several demands of farmers who had been protesting and blocking the border with Ukraine for 6 days. This agreement includes 13 demands of the farmers.
However, on January 18, the Romanian side informed that farmers blocked the movement of trucks in front of the Halmeu-Dacove international checkpoint.
