Romania to increase capacity for transit of Ukrainian grain from 2 million to 4 million tons per month

Romania will double the country’s capacity to help export Ukrainian grain through its territory. This was stated by Romanian Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Sorin Grindeanu, Agerpres reports.

The Romanian minister made the statement after negotiations with representatives of the United States, the European Union, Moldova, Ukraine and Romania on alternative routes for the transportation of grain from Ukraine.

“We have agreed that the export of Ukrainian grain should be accelerated in the context of the known attacks on the Ukrainian ports of Reni and Izmail that have taken place in recent weeks. During these meetings, we emphasized the importance of Romanian land, rail and sea transportation routes to maintain a continuous flow of exports and imports from Ukraine,” Grindeanu explained.

According to him, in terms of transport on the Danube, the Sulin Canal is the only viable waterway for these shipments, so it is important to optimize the capacity of this route.

“It was an extremely good and fruitful meeting, which will allow us, thanks to the measures we will take, to increase the transit capacity of grain from Ukraine through Romania, so that we can reach the goal of almost 4 million tons per month, from the 2 million tons we have now,” the minister added.

Earlier, Romanian Foreign Minister Luminica Odobescu said that her country was working on finding new ways to transport Ukrainian grain.
