Rice losses in Thailand could reach 9 million tons
This year, Thailand may lose up to nine million tons of rice harvest. The reason for this is prolonged rains.
According to analysts, this will cause the largest rice shortage in the last 20 years. The crisis could hit the Asia-Pacific region, the main consumer of the product, particularly hard. The price of cereal has already soared to $17.5 per centner. This is twice as much as it was in July 2020.
As a reminder, Thailand is the world’s largest exporter of rice, only occasionally losing the lead to India. The country’s rice plantations total 9.2 million hectares, which is half of all cultivated land.
