Pea export potential of the Black Sea region will be higher in MY 2021/22

Ukraine. As of April 22, pea acreage already equaled 208.7 Th ha (89% out of the Economy Ministry’s forecast of 235.4 Th ha). In 13 regions, farmers have planted as much peas as projected, or even more. As a reminder, UkrAgroConsult believes the pea acreage may exceed the Economy Ministry’s estimate.

In view of good crop condition, pea yield is estimated to increase compared to a year ago. Moreover, long-term forecasts for May are also favorable: air temperature will rise and accelerate plant growth, while rain will maintain a necessary level of soil moisture.

Given the above-mentioned, Ukraine may gather a better crop in 2021. Export potential is expected to increase by 25%.

Russia. Taking into account that Russia is planning to sow more cereals and pulses next season, the region’s export potential may increase.

Unfortunately, Kazakhstan keeps reducing its pulse plantings from year to year. Peas are sown irregularly, being used mostly as a good preceding crop. Such an approach necessitates Kazakhstan to gradually step up imports – in MY 2020/21, the country holds the sixth position among the biggest importers of Russian peas.
