Oilseeds production in the EU in 2023 MY and forecast for 2024 MY from Copa-Cogeca
According to the latest Copa-Cogeca report, in 2024, the total area under oilseeds in the EU is expected to decrease slightly, as well as significant changes in the yields of the main crops compared to 2023.
Rapeseed
The rapeseed area is expected to decrease by 5.6%, from 6 228 thsd hectares in 2023 to 5 879.4 thsd hectares in 2024. This reduction in acreage, together with a 2.4% decline in yield, will lead to a 7.8% decline in production to 18,175.5 thsd tons.
Sunseed
In contrast to rapeseed, the sunflower area is expected to increase by 1.7% to reach 4,764.4 thsd hectares in 2024. In addition, the yield is expected to increase by 7.9%, which will lead to a significant increase in production by 9.7% to 10734.5 thousand tons.
Soybeans
Soybeans are also showing an upward trend: the planted area is expected to increase by 7.9% to 1,055.6 thsd hectares in 2024. If the yield increases by 2.4%, the total soybean production will reach 3 073.9 thsd tons, which is 10.5% more than in 2023.
Conclusion
In general, the total production of oilseeds in the EU is forecast to decrease slightly by 1.0%, from 32 293 thsd tons in 2023 to 31 983.9 thsd tons in 2024. This decline is mainly due to the decrease in rapeseed production, which is not fully offset by the increase in sunflower and soybean production.
