Morocco to scrap import duty on soft wheat, durum

The Moroccan government said on Monday it planned to suspend import duties on soft wheat and durum.

The government will discuss two decrees to that end during a cabinet meeting on Thursday, a statement from the Prime Minister’s office said.

Traders had told Reuters last month that Morocco will suspend customs duty on soft wheat starting Nov.1 to ensure steady supply and price stability.

Morocco currently applies a customs duty of 135% to protect the domestic soft wheat harvest, which traders say is not enough to meet domestic demand.

Morocco controls soft wheat prices but not durum, whose prices recently surged in the domestic market.
