Moldova will not ban imports of agricultural products from Ukraine for now: “It would not solve anything”
Moldovan Agriculture Minister Vladimir Bola said on Wednesday that the government would not join the ban on imports of certain grains and oilseeds from Ukraine.
He said this on TVR Moldova, NewsMaker reports.
According to the Minister of Agriculture of Moldova, the introduction of restrictions on imports from Ukraine “would not solve anything.”
“It would not have led to either an increase in selling prices for Moldovan farmers or a decrease in production costs. This decision would have produced zero results. On the contrary, Ukraine would have imposed restrictions on the import of Moldovan products, and then much would have been lost,” he said.
Bola pointed out that the volumes of agricultural imports from Ukraine are insignificant – a total of about 177 tons of wheat and four thousand tons of sunflower seeds were imported, while elevators in Moldova can store about three million tons of products.
At the same time, the minister announced additional subsidies of 100 million lei that the Moldovan government could allocate to support Moldovan farmers.
Last week, the Moldovan Ministry of Agriculture announced plans to join the EU’s decision to impose a temporary ban on imports of wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunseed originating in Ukraine, while allowing their transit.
