The Moldovan government does not intend to introduce a state of emergency in agriculture in connection with the drought, as requested by farmers. This was stated by Vasile Charban, state secretary of the Moldovan Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry

“We see that there is a drought, the temperature is quite high. There have been drought years before. We have to adapt our agriculture to these conditions. We have a normative framework in Moldova, and based on it, the agricultural producers have a postponement to pay bank fines,” the official said.

Charban recalled that the farmers already have the possibility to obtain force majeure certificates. At the same time, he clarified that in order to compensate for damages, a farmer must make a report on his agricultural losses and apply to the Chamber of Commerce and Industry to formalize a supporting document.

“Then he informs the creditors about it and stops payment of fines and bank interest for the period that the economic agent needs to recover,” summarized the Secretary of State.

Earlier, Moldova’s leading agrarian association “Farmers’ Power” urged the government to introduce a state of emergency in agriculture, arguing that this decision would help farmers avoid bank fines and thus save them from bankruptcy. According to the association, farmers in the south and center of Moldova suffered the most from the drought this year.
