Mexico to increase corn and wheat imports despite crop growth
Mexico’s grain crop harvest in the 2024/2025 season will recover from the unprecedented drought in the 2023/2024 season. This is stated in the report of the Foreign Agricultural Service under the US Department of Agriculture (FAS USDA).
Corn production will increase to 25.0 million tons next season due to an increase in planted acreage and a recovery of yields to average levels. Mexico harvested 22.7 million tons of corn in the 2023/2024 dry season.
Despite the expected increase in the harvest, corn imports will increase to 22.2 million tons, 0.2 million tons above the 2023/2024 season record. Domestic corn consumption will continue to rise due to stronger feed demand.
Wheat gross harvest will reach 2.8 million tons, below average but 0.1 million tons above the 2023/2024 season record.
Wheat imports next season will increase to 5.7 million tons, 0.5 million tons more than will be imported in the current season.
