European Union crop yield forecasts have been revised slightly downward but remain above the 5-year average, the EU’s Agricultural Resources Monitoring Unit said in a report released Monday.

The winter crop yield forecast “improved further for Spain and Portugal, but was downgraded for Italy and several Western European countries, as well as for Hungary, where the overall yield forecast remains positive.”

Wet conditions over large areas in western Europe, as well as in Denmark and northern Italy, “resulted in waterlogging, high pest pressure and/or delayed sowing, with potentially negative impacts on crop yields.”

“The sharp cold snap in the second half of April severely affected fruit crops and vineyards in several parts of Europe, but damage to annual crops is expected to be minor.”
