India has sufficient wheat stocks to meet domestic requirements and market intervention to maintain stable prices, the government said, adding that it has no plans to change the import duty on the grain for the time being.

“Appropriate measures, if warranted, should be taken to ensure that unscrupulous elements do not accumulate stocks and the price remains stable,” the statement said.

Wheat production in 2024 was 112 million tons. The state-run Food Corporation of India (FCI) has procured about 26.6 million tons of grain till June 11.

“Wheat stocks have never fallen below quarterly buffer stock norms. Further, there are no proposals at present to change the duty structure on wheat imports,” the statement said.

Shivraj Chouhan, the new Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister, said the following:

“The Prime Minister has decided to double the income of farmers. The government will take all possible steps for the welfare of farmers.”
