At the start of 2022, India was expecting a good wheat crop, however, due to premature summer growth, most of the wheat crop was damaged and the government’s math deteriorated. That is why the government is studying the weather signs this year in depth and has raised the expectations of the weather government in the early signs. Agriculture Secretary Manoj Ahuja on Thursday said wheat crop has good prospects in major growing states as prevailing temperatures remain favorable for plant growth and high yield. On the other hand, due to the increase in area, anxiety has also decreased. According to agriculture ministry data, the area under wheat cultivation in rabi season which started in October has increased by three percent to 286.5 lakh hectares till last week.

On the occasion of Mota Anaj Bhoj organized by the Union Agriculture Minister at his residence ahead of the International Millet Year 2023, Ahuja said prospects for the wheat crop are good. The prevailing climate is favorable for plant growth and good yield. He said higher production is expected in 2022-23 crop year (July-June) due to good weather and more area under crop. He said no extreme temperature data was available from wheat producing states like last year. This bodes well for crop prospects, he said.

Another official of the ministry said that farmers have sown wheat crop on more land this year in the hope of fetching higher prices than the minimum support price (MSP) amid export demand. In the 2021-22 crop year, the domestic production of some farmers has come down to 106.84 million. tonnes from 109.59 million tonnes in the previous year due to heat wave in the states. As a result, wheat procurement by state-owned Food Corporation of India (FCI) in the 2022-23 marketing year fell to 187.92 lakh tonnes from 434.44 lakh tonnes in the previous year due to shortfall in domestic production and aggressive procurement by the private sector. But besides good weather this year, there are many things that are accounting for the increase in production. In fact, given the weather signs of early 2022, farmers have planted seeds that can withstand high temperatures. A bumper crop of wheat is expected this year.
