India may import 2 million tons of wheat this season despite record harvest
In the 2024/2025 season (April-March) India may harvest a record wheat crop of 112.5 million tons, the Foreign Agricultural Service under the U.S. Department of Agriculture (FAS USDA) forecasts. This is reported by Grain Online. Last season, India harvested 110.6 million tons of wheat.
The harvest growth was influenced by timely sowing, expansion of sown areas from 31.4 million hectares to 31.8 million hectares and favorable weather conditions. The harvesting campaign will be completed in April.
Despite the record harvest, India may increase wheat imports this season to 2 million tons based on steady domestic demand, declining government stocks and relatively low world prices. Last season, wheat imports totaled 120,000 tons, while exports totaled 300,000 tons.
