India: Edible oil and wheat will be cheaper? These crops, including mustard, have had bumper yields in the area
As per December 16 figures, the area under paddy has increased from 11.13 lakh hectares to 12.64 lakh hectares. During the same period, pulses have been sown in 139.68 lakh hectares as against 134.01 lakh hectares earlier.
If the climate is favorable for the growth of this crop, the increase in the area sown to wheat can lead to higher production. Domestic production of wheat in crop year 2021-22 (July-June) fell to 106.844 million tonnes this time from 109.59 million tonnes in the previous year, due to rising heat and heat wave in some producing states. In May this year, the government banned wheat exports to boost domestic supply and control prices. State-owned FCI’s wheat procurement fell to 187.92 lakh tonnes from the previous 434.44 lakh tonnes for the 2022-23 marketing year due to reduced domestic production and aggressive procurement by private parties.
As per December 16 figures, the area under paddy has increased from 11.13 lakh hectares to 12.64 lakh hectares. Pulses have been sown in 139.68 lakh hectares so far as against 134.01 lakh hectares earlier, while the area under gram cultivation has increased from 94.97 lakh hectares to 97.9 lakh hectares. The area under coarse crops increased from 38.37 lakh hectares to 41.34 lakh hectares.
In the non-food category, the area under oilseeds has increased from 90.51 lakh hectares earlier to 97.94 lakh hectares. Mustard, the main oilseed crop of Rabi season, has increased from 83.18 lakh hectares to 89.99 lakh hectares. India imports about 60 percent of its edible oil requirements. Hence the increase in mustard volume will increase the domestic production of mustard oil. The total area under Rabi crops has increased from 552.28 lakh hectares in the same period last year to 578.10 lakh hectares so far.
