Hungarian producers expect pork prices to increase
Rising costs in 2021 are likely to force pork producers to increase prices in 2022, Tamás Éder, president of the Hungarian Meat Industry Association, told Inforádió, according to Telex.
The pig meat sector has experienced the impact of two viruses in recent years: COVID-19 and the African swine fever virus, Éder said.
He added that in the first quarter of 2021, demand surged by 25% in the international market for live pigs, after which there was a steady decline in prices until the end of the year.
However, feed, energy prices and wages have been rising steadily in the meantime.
Éder did not give details of exactly how much he expects the price to rise, telling the radio programme that the price of live pig production as a whole depends 65-70% on the cost of feed, which has increased by 25-30%.
