Harvesting of spring wheat started in the United States last week, Zerno On-line reports citing the National Agricultural Statistics Service under the US Department of Agriculture (NASS).

By July 28, the spring wheat crop had been harvested from 1% of the planted acreage (2% on the same date last year, 3% on average over the past five years), while the winter wheat crop had been harvested from 82% (77% and 80%) of the planted acreage.

Corn crop conditions improved slightly last week. The percentage of corn acreage in excellent to good condition rose to 68% (67% a week earlier and 55% a year ago).

Soybeans, on the other hand, deteriorated slightly. The share of crops in excellent and good condition decreased to 57% (58% a week earlier and 52% a year ago).

The U.S. Department of Agriculture forecasts that this year U.S. farmers will harvest 54.7 million tons of wheat, 383.6 million tons of corn and 120.7 million tons of soybeans.

Last year’s wheat harvest totaled 49.3 million tons, corn – 389.7 million tons and 113.3 million tons of soybeans.
