Grains Australia seeks applicants for Wheat Council
Expressions of Interest (EOIs) are now open for wheat-industry representatives to join the initial Grains Australia Wheat Council (GAWC).
The Wheat Council is one of several commodity councils being established to represent and provide advice to the Grains Australia Board on behalf of individual grain commodities including barley, oats, oilseeds, pulses and wheat.
The councils are being established to provide advice to help guide the development of Grains Australia’s strategic direction consistent with its delivery of its market information and education, and its three key strategic pillars: classification; trade, and market access.
The Barley Council is already in operation following the merger of Barley Australia and Grains Australia earlier this month, and the cross-industry Barley Australia Board became the Grains Australia Barley Council.
The establishment of the GAWC follows the integration of Wheat Quality Australia into Grains Australia, and the council will take over from the previous Wheat Classification Council.
It will have an expanded responsibility for overseeing Australia’s wheat-classification system and identifying wheat-industry trade and market-access priorities, and requirements for wheat-market information and education.
Grains Australia interim chief executive officer Andrew Young said establishing the GAWC through an EOI process is an exciting step for the organisation.
“We’re looking for people that can provide sound, strategic advice to Grains Australia on the unique needs and priorities of the wheat industry across classification, trade and market access, and information and education,” Mr Young said.
“Membership of the Wheat Council will be extended to individuals based on their skills and experience; their diversity in terms of gender, background, supply-chain knowledge and geography; and of course, on the basis that they have a deep understanding of the Australian wheat industry.”
Grains Australia is inviting applications from people with skills and experience across the Australian wheat industry in sectors including: research; breeding; production; trade; storage; grain-handling; processing, and consumer.
Applicants can fill out the EOI form online available on the Grains Australia website before 5pm Monday, June 13.
Appointments to the Wheat Council will be at the discretion of the Grains Australia board for a period of two years, with the option to be extended for consecutive terms for a maximum of three terms.
