Germany plans to organize the transportation of grain from Ukraine with the help of the railway company DB Cargo. This was reported by Handelsblatt.

DB Cargo plans to help Ukraine and replace the lack of maritime transport, Deutsche Bahn spokesman confirmed.

“As a railway transport employee, I have to ensure that 20 million tons of grain are shipped to prevent a global famine,” said Michael Toyrer, Secretary of State in the Federal Ministry of Transport.

According to him, negotiations are underway with Ukrzaliznytsia JSC and with the railways of Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Romania. Germany is currently studying how to implement this “grain bridge”. It will probably be about 20,000 trains, each of which can carry up to 52 containers or several thousand tons of cargo.

DB Cargo also offered to transport grain by rail to ports on the Adriatic or on the North Sea coast. From there, grain can be transhipped and transported by ship to the regions most in need, such as Ethiopia, Lebanon and Indonesia.
