Georgia bought sunflower oil from Kazakhstan for the second time in history. Due to the tense geopolitical situation, Georgia was unable to import this product this year from its former suppliers and turned to the producers of the Republic of Kazakhstan, which significantly increased the production of sunflower oil.

In May this year, during the visit of an intergovernmental delegation from Kazakhstan to Tbilisi, the parties agreed on the supply of domestic food products to Georgia.

Georgia appeared in the list of countries importing sunflower oil from Kazakhstan. This happened for the first time in 8 years and twice in history. Previously, Georgia purchased this product in Ukraine and Russia. And this year, Georgians have already imported more than 300 tons of sunflower oil from Kazakhstan worth more than half a million dollars.

Gogita Todradze, Spanish Director of the National Statistical Service of Georgia:

– According to statistics, for 9 months of 2022, the volume of imports from Kazakhstan to Georgia increased by 75% compared to the same period last year and exceeded $24 million.

An increase in imports from Kazakhstan to Georgia occurred for some other types of goods, for example, fertilizers, wheat, spices. However, the Georgian market is not so big, and therefore not so attractive for Kazakhstani producers.

Giorgi Dzhakhutashvili, Honorary Consul of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Georgia:

– We are deeply studying all promising areas for Kazakhstani export products. It is imperative that Kazakh companies see Georgia as a location for the subsequent export of their products to Western and Eastern markets. Georgia is more like a logistical opportunity for Kazakhstan than a market.

Thus, goods traditionally purchased in Kazakhstan are in demand in the Georgian market, imports are growing. However, Georgian experts propose, in addition to this, to strengthen and expand logistics ties for the entry of Kazakh products to wider markets through Georgia, which has a free trade agreement with Europe.
